About Us

The Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit agency working to eliminate sexual violence and its impacts. Established in 1979, SARA services are available to survivors of all ages and genders as well as friends, family, and loved ones of survivors. All services are free of cost to beneficiaries - clients and community partners.

Therapy and Advocacy: for survivors and their loved ones, who have healing journeys of their own to navigate. The healing journey after sexual assault is often complex and looks different for every person. SARA supports each person with individualized, trauma-informed services which may include therapy, advocacy, case management, and accompaniment to legal appointments. We work alongside survivors throughout their journeys.

Outreach and Community Involvement: to increase awareness about sexual violence and to ensure survivors are supported and connected when they choose to share their stories. Further, we distribute resources to local medical offices, mental health agencies, service organizations, and schools. And lastly, SARA staff attend community-coordinated response team meetings to build relationships and offer support to other agencies in the greater Charlottesville area.

Prevention Education (not seeking funding through this grant): to create sustainable culture change toward safer, more empathetic communities. SARA Prevention Programs work at the community, interpersonal, and individual level to address the issue of sexual violence.
