Job Description

he Director of Development oversees and manages fundraising for the Presidential Precinct through the identification, cultivation and stewardship of a national portfolio of donors.

The Director of Development will develop and implement a fundraising plan that focuses primarily on corporate and foundation support and secondarily on individual major gifts.

The Director of Development is accountable for a significant portion of budgeted annual revenues and is a key member of the senior staff, integrally involved with marketing, communications, board relations, and is jointly responsible for the overall organizational health and vibrancy of the Precinct.

Primary Responsibilities:
The position requires the ability to work independently under the general direction of the Executive Director while meeting timelines and priorities. This will include varied tasks including, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Develop and implement long-range and short-term fundraising/donor cultivation plans and goals for the Presidential Precinct focused on increasing support from corporate and foundation prospects for operations and specific programs, but with attention to attracting major support from select individuals.
  • Establish prospect lists/groups for fundraising priorities
  • Develop strategies for a cycle of contact/cultivation/donation/stewardship
  • Identify sponsorship opportunities for various levels of support
  • Develop donor recognition opportunities
  • Rigorously maintain contact reports on all prospective and actual donors, documenting continued contact and communication
  • Develop, with legal review, gift and sponsorship agreements
  • Develop strong working relationships with board members with the goal of engaging them in the implementation of fundraising plans, and ensuring that precinct fundraising is not in conflict with that of the six partner organizations.
  • Manage corporate, foundation, and individual giving, including working directly with prospects/donors or in collaboration with the Precinct staff and/or Board Members to: Maintain an active pipeline of prospective donors, including stewardship between giving cycles and conduct tailored research and maintain contact reports to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects
  • Manage all grant applications in alignment with deadlines, preparing applications/proposals, written materials, and letters to prospective grant makers
  • Ensure appropriate, timely, and accurate acknowledgement of all corporate, foundation, individual, and government gifts, drafting appropriate correspondence from management and trustees, as needed.
  • Fulfill all donor recognition requirements for sponsorships and gifts with rigorous attention to fulfillment of naming requirements, press notifications, and other recognition agreements
  • Submit all final reports on a timely basis, working with finance and program staff as needed.
  • Make 15 significant or more new fundraising contacts each month.
  • Maintain donor prospect lists and management tools
  • Staff the Executive Director and Board Chair, and trustees as needed on all matters related to fundraising and advancement, including briefings, talking points, letters, etc.
  • Review and report to the board on quarterly progress, assist with budget projections, recommend changes, enhancements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Proven track record of three or more years of fundraising experience, with priority to demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interface and build connections with senior executives and leaders at major multi-national corporations and foundations.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills demonstrated by the ability to handle simultaneous tasks; detail-oriented with high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, travel in and outside of Virginia
  • Strong knowledge of philanthropy, fundraising techniques, and the non-profit world, especially as related to foundations, corporations and government agencies.
  • Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint, and fundraising software.
  • Ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and move in a fast-paced office environment.
