An Employer's Liability for an Employee's Criminal Acts: Balancing Negligent Hiring, Respondeat Superior and Employment Discrimination Concerns

Attendees will:
  • Become familiar with the doctrine of respondeat superior and its impact on employers when employees commit crimes
  • Become familiar with the torts of negligent hiring and negligent retention and how they can result in liability when employees commit crimes
  • Appreciate the differences in past Virginia cases where courts have found employer liable or not found liable when employees committed crimes
  • Comprehend the balance between potentially discriminatory hiring practices and proper due diligence in researching applicant backgrounds

About the presenter: 
Matt Quatrara is an attorney at the law firm of Lehnart Pettit, P.C., specializing in White Collar Defense, Labor and Employment, and Commercial Litigation. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and the University of Virginia School of Law. He has also served as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in both Charlottesville and Albemarle County and was a Special Assistant United States Attorney for Western District of Virginia. Matt lives in Albemarle County with his wife and two sons, serves on the boards of the Charlottesville Catholic School and Service Dogs of Virginia, and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
